What is Breakdown and Preventive Maintenance?
Today we will be talking about the terms breakdown maintenance and preventive maintenance. What actually is the meaning of these two, what are the main areas where these words and their actual use is, what is the difference between these two, what cost they may incur? All these questions would be answered with the help of this article.
So, primarily we will be talking about the meaning of these two, and if I talk about the breakdown maintenance then this can be performed when we are using any equipment and in this case mainly the repairs and maintenance has to be performed. Now if I talk about preventive maintenance then this identifies all the issues before the use of any equipment and this will be performed at the time of routine schedule maintenance so to avoid the issues further on.
If we talk about the preventive maintenance then it is use in those organizations who all want to avoid the maintenance budget, as it is cost effective. And if we talk about the breakdown maintenance then it is used in those organizations who do not want to spend again and again on the maintenance part, so to avoid the routine expense they use the technique of breakdown maintenance. This helps them to save their time as well as the costs which can somehow be more in case of the preventive one.

Now if I take this topic further then, we have already talked about their meaning and which all are the organizations who adopt the preventive one and where the breakdown maintenance can be used and why is it so? Now let’s talk about the actual differences between these two words, and the primary difference between these two is that BM is used after the occurrence of the failure and PM is used before the occurrence of any failure. In case of PM, an organization can save up to 12- 18% of their costs but in case of BM, it all depends on the equipment. The main issue of PM is that it requires more effective labor as it is a labor intensive one due to constant maintenance and while the other one that is BM, it requires proper planning and execution otherwise it can incur huge losses to the organization who have adopted this technique. PM is a proactive technique while BM is a reactive one.
